Search Engine Marketing consist of many things. What comes to mind for many when they think of Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is Pay Per Click advertising such as Google’s Adwords, Yahoo’s or MSN’s pay per click programs.
When I first started out, I used GoTo.com and and later Overture (yeah, I know, I’m dating myself. Both of those have been gobbled up by the Big Three search engines now)
It was a way for me to get immediate results until my new websites had gained top rankings in the Search Engines.
Sure, I got traffic. But I had to pay for it. As a Small Businessman with a budget, I couldn’t keep throwing good money after bad if something didn’t work.
So I learned the ins and outs of the different Pay Per Click networks available to the business community. On some of my businesses, I ran PPC Campaigns costing in the thousands of dollars each month. I wouldn’t have paid that kind of money unless I knew what I was doing and I was getting the results I needed!
I learned quickly that you can loose a lot of money real fast with Pay Per Click networks if you don’t know what you’re doing. That’s how I learned how to run PPC campaigns, because when I started experimenting with them, I was losing my money real fast for little efforts!
PPC is great for trying out promo’s or sales. Perhaps you have a new product line? PPC will get you a head start on garnering your share of traffic and sales. But be forwarned, it will cost you money. This is how major search engines make a lot, if not most, of their advertising money.
I’d recommend starting to budget at least $1000 per month for a PPC campaign. I’ve seen success with as little as $500 per month, but if you know what you’re doing with Pay Per Click programs, $500 will bring in a few new faces.
